The end of the semester can be a stressful and overwhelming time of the year. To help reduce student and faculty stress, there is a “stress less” station located in Middle Fork. The station has coloring sheets, bubbles for deep breathing, jokes, lavender, and other ideas that have been proven to reduce stress. Come and check it out!

Coping with Holiday Stress through Music

We all know that the holidays can increase our levels of stress and anxiety, but did you know that listening to a specific song can decrease your stress by up to 65%?

According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International, A song called “Weightless” by Marconi Union can decrease stress by 65%, and decrease resting rates by 35%. The song was created in collaboration with Sound Therapists. Its harmonies and rhythms were crafted to decrease heart rates, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. The song Weightless is so effective it is advised not to drive while listening to the song. Here is a link to a full article.

Try these anytime:

Listen to some fun music. Write 3 things you are grateful for. Talk to a friend that will listen. Do something physically active. Exercise can reduce cortisol, the stress hormone. Get enough sleep. Teens need about 9.5 hours. Do something that you can control. Treat yourself to something special. Smell lavender. It helps promote relaxation. Make a list of everything that is stressing you out. Now separate into things you can control and things that you can not. Take a bubble bath. Look at something green. The color green is thought to relieve stress and have a calming effect. Draw your stress. Don’t let it be part of you. Acknowledge your feelings. Just say to yourself “yes, I am feeling stressed”. Remind yourself that you have been in stressful situations before. Breathe. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Doodle. Blow bubbles. Turn on music and dance. Drink water. Play with Playdough. Laugh. Write it all down, then throw it away. Do something nice for someone else. Eat dark chocolate. This helps reduce your levels of cortisol. So does spinach. Eat citrus fruit. This helps to reduce your cortisol levels. Put things into perspective. Organize or clean something. Make a list. Color. Coloring has been described as the second best thing to meditation.
