Diploma Programme World Religions, Geography and Theory of Knowledge teacher Josh Udesen received an artistic grant from Alexa Rose Foundation to travel on his adventure motorbike exploring the backroad and remote locations of the Idaho and Montana portions of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Josh and Middle and High School Director, Andy Johnson, spent a week in June following a portion of the 1,200-mile path of the 1877 flight of nearly 750 Nez Perce men, women and children, led by Chief Joseph, as they fled their traditional homeland while being pursued by the U.S. Army. This pursuit is one of the most fascinating and sorrowful events in Western U.S. history.

The route traverses many of the most iconic landscapes in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming; Hells Canyon, the Salmon, Clearwater, Selway and Lochsa Rivers, Lolo Pass, the Bitterroot Valley, Wisdom Montana, Joseph Pass, Lemhi Pass, Island Park and eventually passes through Yellowstone National Park before heading north almost to the Canadian border.

The grant covered travel, equipment and supplies to produce a photographic, journaling and artistic tour, which will culminate in a series of paintings depicting the landscape of the trail (stay tuned for information on new paintings). The Alexa Rose Foundation is a Boise-based organization focused on providing grants to individual artists interested in furthering their creative work. We look forward to seeing the final products in the near future. Congratulations, Josh!
