Grade 4 is in process of wrapping up their study of Tuck Everlasting, a novel by Natalie Babbitt. For a fun twist on assessing the students’ knowledge, the teachers designed a game called The Great Tuck Everlasting Quiz. Here’s how it worked: children from both classes were put into groups who randomly chose questions about the novel and then answered the questions collectively. When they had their answer, it was turned over to the scorers (a.k.a. Mrs. terBorg and and Ms. Fitz) who gave a score of 1, 2 or 3 depending on the strength of the answer. The final twist came when time was up: each question had been given a point value between 14 and 60. The groups multiplied these points by the number that they had gotten for their answer.
It was obvious from the looks on their faces that the kids loved the activity.
