Grade 6 Math students are currently learning how percentages are used in the real world. One of our students created a Market Day activity in which students in the class were paired up and challenged to make money. Students brought in items ranging from books, stuffed animals, and candy for their stands and then “sold” their items at their stand with different discounts throughout the allotted time. In the process of having fun, they learned about sales tax, adding and subtracting of money, and the concepts of profit and loss. Getting students up and moving around, interacting with others, and creating a real life environment is a great way for students to understand the importance and application of the concepts they learn in Math class.
This was way more fun than worksheets, don’t you think?
