What does a Katy Perry pop dance, an MC Hammer rap and algebra have in common? Well…if you were in our Grade 7 Math class this week, you would have seen students demonstrating different ways of expanding algebraic expressions, using the distributive law and FOIL (that’s First, Outside, Inside, and Last by the way; not aluminum foil as one group of students explained). Jen Coffey, their teacher, asked students to get creative, develop their own ways for remembering these algebraic concepts, and perform either a skit or jingle.
The students had a great time coming up with original scripts, rewriting lyrics, and ultimately, performing their final products for classmates. I am pretty sure that I will never forget FOIL after watching, “Can’t Solve This.” For those of us with memories of MC Hammer’s trademark pants and signature choreography, we can guess which song was the launching point for this group…
