Thanks to Eric Selekof for the following athletics update.
On Saturday, January 8, the Riverstone Otters played two basketball games at Qwest Arena. The Varsity Girls team faced the Idaho City Wildcats and the Varsity Boys team took on the Compass Aviators. Riverstone came away with a split record for the day with the boys winning 52 to 43 and the girls losing 35 to 51 in a game that was closer than the score indicates. The girls’ team was down by 9 at the half and fought their way back to a four point deficit, but the lead was too big to overcome. Idaho City made their free throws in the final minutes of the game to increase their lead and seal the victory. Molly Mc. led the team with 13 points and Tatjana T. had 11 points.
In the second game of the day, the boys’ team got off to a slow start and were down by 4 points, 21-17, at the half. However, the third quarter belonged to the Otters. The team emerged from halftime and outscored Compass 23 to 6 in the quarter turning the 4 point deficit into a 13 point lead. The boys used teamwork, hustle, and composure to post their first victory of the season, and their first ever Varsity win came on the biggest stage of the season!
Thanks to both teams for a great day of basketball and thanks to the fans who turned out in support! The teams look forward to seeing you this Friday for the games against Victory Charter School. Girls Varsity will tip-off at 6:00 PM with the boys following at 7:30 PM.
