Grade 4 Performs Taiko Drumming

During the 2018 Elementary School Spring Arts Festival, Grade 4 performed Taiko drumming for our community. Ms. Fitzharris’ class performed “Renshu” which means “practice” and Ms. Smackey’s class performed “Taiko Gassen” which is a drum battle.

Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion using large drums, known for its dynamic playing style. Culturally and musically, the rhythms and learning process are quite different from what we experience in American culture. Learning taiko drumming also strengthens musical skills such as listening, maintaining a steady beat, and playing in an ensemble.
