Senior Night Volleyball

By | Athletics, Leadership by Example | No Comments

We had a great turnout for our High School Girls’ Volleyball Senior Night with a winning match against Victory Charter School! Students wore their Riverstone colors throughout the school day to show support for the team and were thrilled when the players signed “otter graphs” after school. The grand finale for the day came when we celebrated our seniors by thanking them for their dedication to making our school (and Volleyball team!) great.

A note from the coach, Demi Dlouhy:
“I want to give a big thank you to all of the fans who came out for the Senior Night match. Riverstone hasn’t seen a rocking crowd of that size this season and while the team didn’t play as expected in the first game, they focused up and played hard to win the next three. I am very proud of our five seniors. With all the energy they received from the crowd their adrenaline was pumping. They were able to pull off the win against Victory Charter School and I am looking forward to Thursday’s home match against Victory Charter School which will determine if we will participate in the District Tournament.”

National Orienteering Coach Leads Clinics with Riverstone Kids

Erin Schirm, Orienteering USA’s Head Junior Coach, visited Riverstone February 3-4 to conduct workshops for students interested in improving their abilities in this growing sport involving navigation and endurance. Erin found out about Riverstone when Alex P (’14) and Ben Brock, Director of Outdoor Education, applied for a grant with OUSA intended to help grow the youth orienteering movement.

Riverstone was the only school in the country to be awarded the grant. As the Head Junior Coach, Erin wanted to come see what Riverstone Orienteering is all about (orienteering is a major component of PE for students in Grades 8 and 10). He was very happy with what he found! Fifteen students braved the freezing after-school workshops and most left asking when they could do it again! With Erin and OUSA’s generous support, look for more orienteering opportunities in the future!

Middle School Volleyball

Our Middle School Volleyball team has been hard at work improving their skills this season! At yesterday’s game against Victory, the girls showed their best teamwork to date, including creating longer rallying and cheering each other on in between points. Although they lost overall 1-2, the girls were thrilled to win their first game!

Thank you to Middle School Spanish teacher, Jessica Davidson-Almuveder, for coaching the girls this season. Go Otters!

Riverstone Fùtbol Club Starts Strong

The Riverstone High School Soccer Team, also known as Riverstone Fùtbol Club (a nod to their international origins), had their first game last weekend. The score was 10-0 in favor of the Otters at the end of the game.

Watching the team, two things were clear: our older students were stepping up as strong leaders on the field but additionally, our new players were welcomed into the mix with open arms.

And, true to tradition, we have players from around the world on the team, including players from China, France, Sudan, and Myanmar (Burma). We also had a great group of parents and friends cheering on the team.

Thanks to coach Katie Stauffer for working with the players this year!

Go Otters!

Ice, Fog, Rain and Snow Does Not Deter Riverstone Orienteers

Congratulations to Riverstone students, Connor D, Alex P, Natalie P, and Parker T, for their recent success with the City of Trees Orienteering Club! Along with Outdoor Education Director, Ben Brock, our students were victorious over  the wintery conditions on their way to outstanding finishes at the meet this past Saturday.

Orienteering,  kayaking, and rock climbing are a few of the amazing activities that Ben has introduced into our Middle Years Programme PE class.

Due to technical difficulties, we cannot load photos on the blog right now but we can link you to the City of Trees blog with photos and great stories. Check it out here.

Congratulations again!
