Preschool and PreKindergarten

Starting your child’s journey

Preparing the whole child for a lifelong journey of learning is the primary goal of the Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten classes. Our small, nurturing environment and experienced staff focus on the cognitive, social, and emotional well-being of students while building upon the strengths of the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum.

Activities are student-centered and developmentally appropriate

In both classes, activities are student-centered and developmentally appropriate, with a balance between free-choice activities and small group directed activities. Listening, pre-reading, and writing skills are promoted in Language Arts activities. Students learn math with hands-on manipulatives. Art, music, PE, and library time are integral parts of the week.

The Primary Years Programme helps students make connections

Additionally, by exploring four trans-disciplinary themes on an in-depth basis, students begin to make connections between school and their personal experiences outside of school, as well as begin to take responsibility for their learning. Physical development is promoted through outdoor education, such as rafting and ice skating, PE, and our Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten playground.

Part of a larger school community

A unique aspect of the Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten classes is that students are part of the larger Riverstone community. Students often participate in Elementary School assemblies, and may be partnered with older students in appropriate activities, which allows students to form relationships within the school community.

Preschool students are our youngest learners

The Preschool class is designed for students who are 3 years of age by the first day of school. The student: teacher ratio is 14:2 with all instruction in English. Themes of study center on the meaning of friendship, expressing themselves through spoken language and art, building classroom community, and sharing the planet.

Pre-Kindergarten students learn in dual language environment

The Pre-Kindergarten class is designed for students who are 4 years of age. The student:teacher ratio is 18:2 with dual language Spanish: English instruction where one teacher instructs in English and the other instructs in Spanish. Themes center on how to be internationally minded, how people express themselves through universal languages such as math, art, music, love and dance, as well as how the world works.
